Backpack Studio

About Backpack Studio

I built Backpack Studio for people who make audio.

I'm Ed Filowat, an indie developer based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—and sometimes New York City when I can find a cheap place to stay. I've spent my life coding, working in podcasting and audio, and tirelessly experimenting with new technology in a field that never stops changing.

The product

What is Backpack Studio?

Backpack Studio is an iOS audio production app. It records a microphone while you trigger music, effects, intros, outros, and other sounds from an unlimited-page soundboard. The live mix can be saved, streamed, edited, and shared without moving the project to a desktop studio.

Private rooms bring as many as three remote guests into a recording. Backpack mixes the host, guests, and sound pads, then saves the result in Recordings, ready to play back or share.

Backpack AI takes the production further. Edit audio like text—or simply tell Backpack what you want changed. It can transcribe the conversation, create show notes and chapters, find the strongest highlights, turn them into captioned social clips, and generate original effects, musical bumpers, or transitions for your sound pads. It all happens inside the app. Explore Backpack AI

From me

A life in code and sound

I've spent my career where software, podcasting, and audio meet. I was the original developer of Bossjock Studio, and I'm always testing new ways to record, mix, edit, share, and make audio more accessible on mobile devices.

I made Backpack for people who want to produce while they record: speak, cue music, play clips, interview guests, watch the mix, and finish with a usable recording. I write the practical guides on this site from my experience building and using the current app.

Independent reference

Backpack and accessibility

Backpack Studio includes VoiceOver labels and announcements, custom rotor actions, Magic Tap support, and Spanish localization. The independent AppleVis community maintains a public app directory entry with accessibility information and user comments.

Supporting independent software

I'm building Backpack without outside funding.

Building an audio app independently means I handle the engineering, new iOS releases, audio infrastructure, servers, accessibility, support, documentation, and the experiments that become tomorrow's features. I do that work while competing with funded companies and adapting to constant changes in technology.

When you use Backpack Studio, choose an optional paid tool that helps your work, leave an honest App Store review, or tell another podcaster about the app, you help me keep developing it. Your support gives me more time to improve the tools, answer questions, and keep Backpack working as iOS and audio technology change.
